Malaysia Airlines consolidates network
KUALA LUMPUR (Malaysia Airlines) - In the Northern Winter 2005 pattern which takes effect from 30 October until 26 March 2006, Malaysia Airlines will consolidate its network by increasing frequencies and capacity to selected destinations while revisiting sectors that have demonstrated poor performance. Services to new destinations such as Amritsar, Cochin, Fuzhou, Guilin and Shenzen will be deferred indefinitely as part of the national airline's efforts to contain its cost growth and improve performance.
Currently, Malaysia Airlines operates 30 weekly flights from Kuala Lumpur to seven Indian cities which are New Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad. Frequencies into New Delhi, one of three primary gateways in the Indian sub-continent will be increased from four times weekly to daily flights bringing the total to 33 weekly flights.
In China, Malaysia Airlines operates into eight cities which are Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Kunming, Shanghai, Xiamen and X'ian. Flights to Xiamen, China will now be increased from three to four weekly services bringing the total number of flights per week to 54 from Kuala Lumpur.
Capacity will be injected into Australia and New Zealand specifically Perth and Auckland, in which passengers can look forward to flying on the B747 daily - currently flights are operated on the B777. At present, Auckland is the only entry point into New Zealand and into Australia, the airline flies to five cities.
The realignment of the network is expected to result in improving route financials thereby leveraging on yield improvement opportunities which is expected to bring about better performance. Malaysia Airlines continues to monitor and evaluate its operations and will further realign and consolidate its services to complement traffic demand.
