JAL international traffic up, domestic down; Qantas shares gain

11-Aug-2010

Japan Airlines reports domestic passenger numbers fell 2.7% year-on-year in Jun-2010 to 2.76 million. It follows three successive months of gains. Rival ANA, meanwhile, handled 3.05 million domestic passengers in the month, up 5.8%.

JAL’s load factors rose 3.5 ppts to 57.9% as it continued to pare back capacity, while ANA’s surged 6.6 ppts to 61.7%.

Internationally, JAL handled just under 800,000 passengers, up 5.8% year-on-year.

ANA’s shares fell 2.5% yesterday as Japanese stocks went down for the third successive session on the back of weak Chinese import figures. JAL was delisted in Feb-2010.

Stocks in Taiwan fell 0.2% on profit taking, but airline stocks rose on the improving outlook for cross-Strait services. China Airlines gained 2.1%, while EVA Air surged 5.4%.

Qantas gained 1.2% to AUD2.63 ahead of its financial results tomorrow. HSBC Holdings Plc raised the carrier from "neutral" to "overweight".
