Indian Airport construction updates - Bangalore, Kannur

SYDNEY (Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation) - Leela Group, a Mumbai-based hospitality firm, announced plans to construct a new international airport in Kannur, Kerala State.

Leela Group plans to invest INR9 billion and undertake the project under a Build, Operate and Own (BOO) basis. The project, which had been proposed 12 months earlier, has been approved by the Central Government and is scheduled to commence construction early next year.

Ministry of Civil Aviation announced it would extend the area of the passenger terminal at the proposed New Bangalore International Airport, due a revised forecast of passenger traffic (Deccan Herald, 23-Dec-05). Meanwhile, Airports Authority of India announced only ten of 86 operational airports in India were profitable in 2004/05.
