Frankfurt Airport establishes new traffic records in May-2010

Analysis

Fraport has reported a further stabilisation of the growth trend last month, with Frankfurt Airport (FRA) registering new record levels for both passengers and airfreight in May-2010 (beating previous records established in May-2008). FRA handled 4.76 million passengers and over 200,000 metric tons of airfreight in May-2010, up 7.1% and 39.7% year-on-year.

Fraport Executive Board Chairman, Dr Stefan Schulte stated the May figures were "extremely satisfying" and "confirm the positive trend in passenger development and again impressively underpin Frankfurt Airport's strength, particularly in the intercontinental aviation sector". He added the high growth rates in airfreight tonnage "result especially from Asia's dynamic economic activity and from airfreight's special forte of making available at short notice the capacities required by industry and trade."

May 2010 also marked a new record for maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) in absolute terms, with 2.49 million metric tons handled. Aircraft movements improved by 2.5% year-on-year to 41,694 takeoffs and landings. This improvement includes a "conspicuous" 8% rise in intercontinental flights.

On the Group level, Fraport's five majority-owned airports handled approximately 8.3 million passengers in May-2010, 14.2% more than in May 2009. Cargo throughput (airfreight and airmail tonnage) jumped 39.2% to a total of 230,064 metric tons. Aircraft movements at Frankfurt (FRA), Antalya (AYT), Lima (LIM), Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR) rose 9.9% to 70,432 takeoffs and landings. Antalya and Lima again turned out to be the growth drivers, according to Fraport. Turkey's Antalya Airport registered 29.6% passenger growth in May 2010, while Peru's Lima Airport welcomed 19.5% more passengers.

Fraport's shares eased 0.3% on Friday, while Zurich Airport was steady and AdP gained 1.2%.
