European airports face up to the challenges of the 21st Century
Airports Council International Europe (ACI-E) has published a document 'An Outlook for Europe's Airports, Facing the Challenges of the 21st Century'. Released before the onset of the volcanic eruption in Iceland that somewhat clouded the future for airports and airlines in Europe, the document tackles the challenges of capacity, environment, connectivity and security. On capacity, ACI-E points out that, despite the global crisis (which has since taken on another dimension), demand for air services in Europe is still expected to double by 2030. While European airports have committed a total of EUR120 billion to new facilities between and plan an overall 41% capacity increase by 2030, this will be "far from adequate".
