easyJet founder launches legal claim over branding

Premium Analysis

easyJet's founder, Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, filed a claim with London's High Court, accusing easyJet of damaging its brand by linking it too closely with ancillary businesses. A brand licence agreement between EasyGroup, wholly owned by Sir Stelios, and easyJet specifies that 75% of the airline's annual sales must be derived from its core business. The two companies are in disagreement over what is considered "core" business, with EasyGroup stating the airline has moved beyond this by selling co-branded credit cards, advertising space on its website and selling customer data to third parties.
