CargoCity South strengthens Frankfurt Airport’s future as leading airfreight hub
FRANKFURT (Fraport) - Frankfurt Airport's CargoCity South (CCS) has become an international success story since it was launched in 1996 on the first land returned by the U.S. Rhein-Main Air Base. According to Fraport AG's vice chairman Prof. Manfred Schölch, CargoCity South will thus secure the future of Europe's largest airfreight hub, at least for the medium term.
Last night, Prof. Schölch welcomed members of the business-location policy committee of the Offenbach Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK Offenbach) to an information visit at the southern area of Frankfurt Airport (FRA). He explained, "Our CargoCity South offers internationally operating logistics companies decisive competitive advantages." These advantages include: direct access to the huge global network of airlines operating via FRA, optimal handling of import and export cargo and customs procedures, fast customer service, and excellent links to land-side transportation networks.
Peter Lehmann, chairman of the IHK Offenbach committee and managing director of Egelsbach airfield in Offenbach County, underscored the importance of Frankfurt Airport's logistics center for Offenbach city and county: "The proximity to CargoCity South and the excellent connections to the rest of the world represent a significant competitive advantage for many of our internationally oriented businesses and companies."
Schölch emphasized that the total investment by the various partners at CargoCity South has reached about €600 million to date. This money has been well invested, because there are already more than 250 companies - forwarders, express companies, and other service providers from the cargo industry - established and offering their expertise at CCS. Currently, there are approximately 5,500 people working at CCS.
In 1994 and 1995, the U.S. Air Force returned portions of the Rhein-Main Air Base back to Fraport AG. Thanks to fast planning and approval procedures, the first forwarders building was completed in 1996. In 1997, Fraport AG and LUG Aircargo Handling GmbH both inaugurated cargo terminals near the apron at CargoCity South.
Meanwhile, the list of globally-operating logistics enterprises based at the southern side of FRA speaks for itself: Dachser, DHL Danzas, Kühne & Nagel, Nippon Express, Panalpina, Yusen and soon Schenker. Over the years, the readers of renowned international trade publications have voted Frankfurt Airport the best cargo airport in the world, including because of its outstanding CargoCity South.
