CAAC forecasts strong traffic growth until 2020

Analysis

CAAC reports total passenger numbers at 133 airports in China in the 12 months ended 31-Dec-04 rose 38.8% year-on-year to 240 million, while cargo volume rose 22.3% to 5.5 million tonnes.

CAAC forecasts:

  • By 2010: Annual passenger numbers to reach 500 million and cargo volume to reach 10 million tonnes with 190 airports;
  • By 2020: Annual passenger numbers to reach 1.4 billion and cargo volume to reach 30 million tonnes with 230 airports.

"CAAC is facing a series of problems, including how to further expand existing airports, improve airport facilities, upgrade the quality of their management and services… Although the CAAC adopts many measures to improve the infrastructure through intensive investment and speeding up the pace of construction, it still does not meet the actual demand of the fast growing civil aviation industry," Qin Zhanggao, Deputy Director General.
