ARINC - Finnair Will Join Europe's Link2000+ Program; ARINC Supports New Airbus Avionics Development

Analysis

ARINC Incorporated today announced its customer Finnair has joined Link2000+, the Eurocontrol program co-coordinating the implementation of Controller Pilot Data link Communications (CPDLC) in Europe.

A long-time user of ARINC's GLOBALinkSM service, Finnair plans to equip 29 of its A320 family aircraft with new VDLM2 avionics for use in the Link 2000+ ATC program by the end of 2006.

"We already enjoy major operational benefits from ARINC's GLOBALink data link service," stated Markku Lemmetty, Finnair's Data link Flight Operations Avionics Manager. "We expect the benefits of improved ATC communications in the Link2000+ program to be even greater. We are very enthusiastic about joining."

Finnair plans to install a new generation of Airbus ATSU avionics to take advantage of Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) messaging. ARINC is supporting Airbus in the development of its new avionics through a connection to ARINC's ATN/VDLM2 network, which ARINC deployed in 2004.

"Airbus has been able to make rapid progress on its new ATSU avionics thanks to the network connectivity and support of ARINC," stated Serge Bagieu, Airbus FANS-B Program Manager. "We are offering our improved ATSU technology both as a retrofit and as standard equipment for our A-320 family of aircraft."

With the addition of planes from Finnair, the Link2000+ program will have more than 266 participating aircraft from 12 airlines. Flight crews enjoy improved ATC communications because they can use efficient CPDLC digital messaging instead of traditional voice radio. The Link 2000+ program is already shaping the future of air traffic control in Europe, reducing the workload of controllers and pilots and effectively providing additional airspace capacity.

ARINC has supported the Link2000+ program since its inception, and the Eurocontrol Maastricht Upper Air Center has been using ARINC's ATN/VDLM2 network successfully for 20 months to handle a steadily increasing proportion of ATC communications in the world's busiest airspace.

Martin Adnams, EUROCONTROL LINK 2000+ Program Manager, stated, "We are delighted Finnair has chosen to join the Link2000+ Pioneer phase. This is another milestone in the advance of CPDLC, targeted at the steady improvement of efficiency of passenger aviation in Europe. We are grateful for the strong support ARINC has shown our program from the beginning. Their contribution has been outstanding."
