Airport Authority Hong Kong - air cargo throughput all-time high in September
HONG KONG (Airport Authority of Hong Kong) - Growing by 9.2%, air cargo throughput at the Hong Kong International Airport ("HKIA") reached a record high of 304,000 tonnes in September 2005 when compared with the same month last year, confirming HKIA's status as the world's busiest international air cargo hub.
Passenger traffic and aircraft movements also achieved impressive growth, up 8.5% and 12.3% from the corresponding month last year, respectively. September recorded 3.3 million passengers and 22,530 aircraft movements, with the latter breaking a single-day record of 812 on September 30, the day before the Mainland's "Golden Week Holiday".
Airport Authority's Commercial Director, Mr Hans Bakker, said: "We are delighted with the impressive growth in cargo, passenger and aircraft movements. Looking ahead, we are confident about our robust growth trend, fuelled by strong transfer / transit traffic and economic buoyancy."
Mr Bakker added that the three air traffic categories all showed healthy growth in the six months ended September, with cargo throughput recording a year-on-year increment of 11.3% to more than 1.7 million tonnes. This compared favourably with average international freight traffic growth of 3.5%.
Boosted by transfer and transit traffic, the number of passengers travelling through Hong Kong International Airport during the same six-month period under review went up by 9.5% to 20.8 million, with the strongest performing routes covered the markets of Mainland/Taiwan, Mainland/Southeast Asia, Southeast Asia/North America and Australasia/Europe. Aircraft movements also increased by 10.8% to 132,400.
