AirAsia announces plans to expland operations

Analysis

SYDNEY (Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation) - AirAsia confirmed the following strategic plans:

  • Fleet: Will take delivery of the first of 60 new A320s on 08-Dec-05, with the new aircraft eventually replacing the airline's current fleet of 28 B737-300s, which will be deployed by its JVs in Thailand and Indonesia;
  • Network: Plans to operate to five more destinations in China and secure landing rights in India (although there is no timeframe for services to India). The airline is also seeking to launch new services to destinations in Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.

"I am not interested in [the Singapore] route. We are going to other places…We will open up new destinations. People can go to Bali and Bangkok to shop. It is going to be a loss for Singapore," Tony Fernandes.
