Sweden's Swedavia reported (07-Oct-2013) passenger numbers at its airports increased 6% year-on-year to 3.1 million in Sep-2013, with growth in domestic and international traffic. Domestic passengers increased 6% to 1.2 million and international passengers increased 6% to 1.9 million. The strongest traffic growth from Stockholm were seen on Berlin (+18%) and Paris (+16%) routes. Aircraft movements increased 8% to 19,000. [more - original PR - Swedish]

SAS eyes lower labour cost bases outside Scandinavia as the airline's margin starts to fall again
A harsh truth for SAS is that improvements to its network and product, and its focus on Scandinavia's frequent travellers, have not isolated it from unit revenue weakness. Moreover, in spite of very creditable progress with unit cost reduction, it still has a high cost base. In FY2016 its operating margin started to turn down again. In addition to further targeted cost savings SAS is now considering further, more radical, changes to its production model.
In particular, it is assessing whether or not to establish operations outside Scandinavia for some of its European traffic. Indeed, it would seem that SAS, once an opponent of Norwegian's plans to use Ireland as a trans-Atlantic base in search of lower labour costs, has borrowed a page from its rival's book on how to re-write airline strategy.
Finnair and TAP Portugal: their location based long haul niche strategies compared
Both Finnair and TAP are based in peripheral corners of Europe: Finnair in the extreme northeast and TAP in the southwest. Both are based in countries with relatively small populations, but they have developed networks that capitalise on their geographic location to carry connecting traffic from across Europe and elsewhere to long haul destinations in other continents.
TAP's main long haul market is Upper South America (primarily Brazil), but it also has a secondary long haul niche in Africa. Finnair's main long haul market is Northeast Asia, with an additional presence in South and Southeast Asia. Both also operate to the US. On short haul, LCC competition has been a bigger threat to TAP than to Finnair, but cost savings are important to both.
TAP and Finnair have similar traffic volumes, unit costs and average trip lengths. Moreover, both have struggled to generate sustainable profitability.
