Sri Lanka's 2nd international airport to be completed in Dec-2011

Sri Lankan Government reportedly plans to complete construction of the nation's second international airport, at Mattala in Hambantota, in Dec-2011 (Daily News, 31-Mar-2010). The USD200 million project will be spread across a 2,000 ha site. Construction was launched in Nov-2009. Phase I construction includes a 3,500 m runway, apron, taxiway, passenger and cargo terminal, access roads, fuel storage, sewerage treatment plant, water supply facilities, meteorological building, fire fighting facilities and car parking facilities. Phase II construction includes a MRO centre, hotel and recreational facilities, pilot training centre, private jet hangar, technical training centres and a full length parallel taxiway. Sri Lanka's other international airport is located at Bandaranaike.
