South Korea int'l pax up 12.4% in 1Q2012, int'l cargo down 2.9%. LCCs have 43% domestic share

South Korea's Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs reports (22-Apr-2012) the following traffic highlights for the three months ended Mar-2012:

  • Passenger numbers:
    • International: 11.4 million, +12.4% year-on-year;
    • By region:
      • Japan: 2.9 million, +7.5%;
      • China: 2.3 million, +7.8%;
      • Southeast Asia: 4.1 million, +19.7%;
      • Americas: 934,829, +5.3%;
      • Europe: 661,764, +14.1%;
      • Oceania: 420,440, +20.3%;
      • Others: 165,849, +15%;
    • Domestic: 4.9 million, +11.5%;
      • LCCs: 2.1 million, +17.4%;
  • Cargo volume: 857,000 tonnes, -1.9%;
    • International: 782,000 tonnes, -2.9%;
    • By region:
      • Japan: 109,610 tonnes, -3.1%;
      • China: 136,022 tonnes, -8.4%;
      • Southeast Asia: 222,039 tonnes, +0.9%;
      • Americas: 157,647 tonnes, -6.2%;
      • Europe: 132,175 tonnes, +0.4%;
      • Oceania: 13,809 tonnes, +4.6%;
    • Others: 11,289 tonnes, -1.9%;
    • Domestic: 74,000 tonnes, +9.6%.

According to the Ministry, South Korea's full service carriers accounted for 66.6% of total international passengers in 1Q2012, while the nation's LCCs accounted for 6.3% of the total international passenger numbers, up 2.6 ppts. South Korea's LCCs accounted for 43%, up 2.1 ppts of the total domestic passenger numbers in 1Q2012.
