Shanghai airports to handle 100 million pax, 5.5 million tonnes of cargo p/a by 2015

China's Shanghai Municipal Development and Reform Commission, in its 12th Five Year Plan Shanghai Civil Aviation Development Outline, stated Shanghai Pudong and Shanghai Hongqiao airports are expected to handle 100 million passengers and 5.5 million tonnes of cargo p/a by 2015. According to reports by Carnoc.com and Shanghai Daily, the plan includes construction of a new satellite terminal, S1 Terminal, at Shanghai Pudong, which will also have two terminal buildings and three runways, making the airports a key international hub. The Government aims to develop Pudong into not only the core hub in the Asia Pacific region but also the world's busiest international airfreight centres. Meanwhile, China Eastern Airlines' international destinations are expected to increase by 14% during the nation's 12th five-year plan period while its international flight frequency will increase by 44%. Meanwhile, upgrade work on Shanghai Pudong T1 and Shanghai Hongqiao T1 will also be completed by 2015.
