SESAR and Eurocontrol deliver transition plan towards Single European Airspace System

SESAR and Eurocontrol delivered (11-Sep-2019) a transition plan to the European Commission towards the implementation of a Single European Airspace System. The plan proposes a way forward with a focus on the next five years to optimise Europe's airspace capacity by combining airspace design with available technology solutions from SESAR. The plan sets out three key operational and technical measures required to be implemented from 2020 to 2025 to set in motion the transformation changes outlined in the SESAR airspace architecture study (ASA). These measures are:

  • Launching an airspace reconfiguration programme supported by an operational excellence programme;
  • Ensuring the planned rollout of SESAR Solutions, supporting cross border free route operations, and air-ground and ground-ground connectivity;
  • Accelerating market uptake of the next generation SESAR technologies and services in order to overcome the defragmentation of European airspace through virtualisation and free flow of data among users across borders;

The transition plan also proposes how the ASA recommendations can be taken up in existing plans to accelerate implementation towards a digital European sky. [more - original PR]
