Qantas Group: Alliance with Etihad vs Emirates like 'being offered a bike before a BMW'

Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce, speaking at the CAPA Australia Pacific Aviation Summit, stated (08-Aug-2013) "the jury is out on equity partnerships" of the kind that Etihad is building. On the Emirates agreement, Mr Joyce confirmed that Qantas had spoken to successive management teams from Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific over a number of years but had not been able to come to an agreement with them. He also confirmed that Etihad had approached Qantas before Emirates had, but said: "it was a bit like being offered the bike before the BMW". He said Etihad Airways had proposed an alliance to Qantas almost a decade ago but "the numbers didn't stack up". He said in 2010, the carrier "looked at the numbers [of an Etihad partnership] and we didn't believe it could be economic."
