Japan Airlines (JAL) announced (15-Feb-2012) it will launch new non-stop service from Tokyo Narita to San Diego in Dec-2012 and to Helsinki in Mar-2013, utilising Boeing 787-8 aircraft on both routes. This will supplement 787 service between Tokyo Narita and Boston which is scheduled to commence from 22-Apr-2012, subject to necessary approvals. Details include:

  • San Diego: The San Diego service will be the first non-stop route linking San Diego with Japan and Asia, with JAL to initially serve the city with four times weekly frequency from Dec-2012, increasing to daily from Mar-2013. The service will be part of the trans-Pacific joint business agreement between JAL and oneworld alliance partner, American Airlines, which is scheduled to codeshare on this route;
  • Helsinki: With the Tokyo Narita-Helsinki route, JAL will open its first new service between Japan and Europe in 20 years. The service will be operated four times weekly from Mar-2013, with the carrier noting daily frequency is planned within 1HFY2013. Helsinki is the major hub airport of JAL's oneworld alliance partner Finnair, "with whom JAL plans to strengthen its relationship".
