Delta delays launch of Tokyo Narita-Guangzhou service

Delta Air Lines CEO Richard Anderson stated the carrier would delay the launch of a new service from Tokyo Narita to Guangzhou, scheduled for launch on 06-Apr-2011 (Dow Jones, 25-Mar-2011). The carrier is also planning to reduce capacity to and through its Tokyo hub by 15% to 20% through May-2011 following the Japanese earthquake, tsunami and nuclear alert. Delta has continued Tokyo Narita services but has suspended the recently introduced service to Tokyo Haneda. The carrier last week warned that the Japanese crisis could reduce 2011 profits by between USD250 million and USD400 million. Mr Anderson said that "Japan is critical to Delta Air Lines" and that "by and large we're going to operate our full schedule out of Narita". The carrier will however operate smaller aircraft and may cancel some services.
