AirAsia Philippines takes delivery of first aircraft

AirAsia Philippines took delivery of its first aircraft on 15-Aug-2011 at Diosdado Macapagal International Airport. The A320 is the first of four aircraft that will be delivered to AirAsia Philippines in its first year of operation. The second is expected to arrive later in 2011 and another two will be delivered by Jun-2012. The LCC is awaiting approval to commence commercial operations in Oct-2011. It plans to deploy the first aircraft on routes to Singapore, Macau and Hong Kong, and the second to commence services to Bangkok, Incheon, Kalibo and Puerto Princesa. CEO Marianne Hontiveros stated AirAsia's reputation should ensure the local affiliate succeeded amid rising competition and the carrier will be "substantially cheaper (than our competitors)" (AFP, 15-Aug-2011). An AirAsia Philippines spokesperson stated the carrier approached the Civil Aviation Authority of Macau two weeks ago “to obtain the necessary information about the flight approval process between Philippines and Macau." However, the authority has not received formal application for operating services between the countries. [more]
