AirAsia Japan files AOC application; initial routes from Narita to Sapporo, Fukuoka and Okinawa

AirAsia Japan Co Ltd stated (27-Oct-2011) it has submitted its application, required by the Civil Aeronautics Act, for an Air Operator's Certificate to the Civil Aviation Bureau of Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), according to reports in The Nikkei and Mainichi Shimbun.

This is the first of a number of major milestones for the airline as it accelerates its start-up activities in preparation for the launch of commercial services. It is planning to deploy 180-seat A320 equipment from its home base of Tokyo Narita International Airport to Sapporo (New Chitose), Fukuoka and Okinawa (Naha) in Aug-2012 and Seoul/Incheon and Busan in Oct-2012. Aside from Busan, the four other routes are already served by parent, All Nippon Airways (ANA). AirAsia Japan, a JV LCC between ANA and AirAsia, will serve both domestic and international destinations, and will soon start recruiting and staff training activities in advance of the expected commencement of commercial flights in Aug-2012.
