Africa's safety issues drive travellers to use foreign carriers
African Civil Aviation Commission Aviation Safety Officer Mesfin Fikru stated one of the major causes of air accidents on the continent is the granting of Air Operator Certificates to carriers without adherence to stipulations as laid down by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (punchng.com, 06-Jul-2011). Mr Fikru stated that some countries repeatedly disobey the civil aviation regulations. The poor safety reputation in Africa has led to many travellers preferring to use foreign carriers, which is hurting the development of aviation in Africa, stated Mr Fikru.
