ACI World: Airports generated USD172.2bn in revenue in 2017, but 94% are loss making

Airports Council International (ACI) World published (14-Mar-2019) its annual airport key performance indicators (KPIs) on global air transport demand for 2017. KPIs include:

  • Revenue: USD172.2 billion, +6.2% year-on-year;
    • Aeronautical revenue: 55.8%;
    • Non-aeronautical revenue: 39.9%;
    • Non-operating revenue: 4.3%;
  • Global aeronautical revenues per passenger: USD9.95;
  • Non-aeronautical revenues per passenger: USD7.08;
  • Passenger traffic: 7.5%;
  • Total cost to the airport per passenger: USD13.69;
  • Industry return on invested capital (ROIC): 7.4%;
  • Share of airports that are loss making: 94%;
