Sydney Airport announces major new development plans
SYDNEY (Sydney Airport) - Sydney Airport Corporation Ltd (SACL) will tomorrow commence a 90-day public consultation period on two Preliminary Draft Major Development Plans (MDPs) for the south south-east precinct of Sydney Airport.
SACL is seeking Federal Government approval to two development options for the currently unimproved 20 hectare site.
The two development options, with access from Foreshore Road, encompass plans for discount retail outlets; bulky goods; specialty food outlets; a supermarket; office space; car parking and potentially, cinemas. Both options have been accredited by the Department of Transport and Regional Services as well as the Department of Environment & Heritage for public exhibition, and are compatible with the 2004-approved Sydney Airport Master Plan.
Each option comprises approximately 60,000 sq. m of commercial floor space, with development costs expected to be approximately $200 million over an initial two year period, with construction potentially commencing in 2007 and completion possible by 2008.
Max Moore-Wilton, Executive Chairman & CEO of SACL said the public consultation period was a vital part of the process and that any input from the public would be carefully considered. He went on to outline the benefits of the proposed developments that, he says, are quite similar to those already operating at many other airports across Australia:
“A development of this sort, on under utilised land at Sydney Airport, will serve to benefit the surrounding community, both in terms of job creation as well as by providing a needed service.
Our approved airport master plan identified that this site could be put to productive non-aviation uses for some considerable time.
“All the world’s great airports are moving toward a model that offers a diverse mix of non-aeronautical services, so as to have a more sustainable and cost-effective business,” Mr Moore-Wilton said.
Planning for the project is subject to thorough and stringent federally legislated approval processes, as well as an extensive consultation period with relevant local, State and Federal bodies and aviation stakeholders. The development is considered as part of SACL’s Airport Ground Travel Plan in the planning phase.
