Mike Levine, guru of US aviation, and an architect of US deregulation, began a presentation to the International Aviation Club in Washington this week by giving a short history of the airline industry over the last 80 years. His observation was that every time there had been a major downturn for the airlines, business quickly bounced back into the usual virtuous cycle of lower costs and system expansion. [656 words]
