Shanghai Pudong International Airport selects SITA to handle 70 million visitors in 2012 World Expo

Analysis

Shanghai/Singapore (SITA) - Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) will take a major step towards realizing its goal of handling 100 million passengers by 2020 when it opens its new terminal next year equipped with state-of-the-art IT solutions from SITA, it was announced today.

Beating off stiff competition, SITA and the SIIC Shanghai International Trade (Group) Co. Ltd have been awarded a four-year $8 million contract to equip PVG's Terminal 2 in time for its scheduled opening next year, with integrated airport management systems including SITA's passenger check-in system AirportConnect Common Use Terminal Equipment (CUTE) and baggage reconciliation system, BagManager.

The new terminal is currently under construction and is designed to handle up to 60 million passengers per year in anticipation of a huge influx of visitors for both the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 2010 World Expo. About 70 million tourists are expected to travel to Shanghai for the World Expo.

SIIC Shanghai International Trade (Group) Co. Ltd is wholly owned by the Shanghai Municipal Government and will provide local knowledge and expertise while SITA focuses on delivering IT solutions which will facilitate passenger management at check-in, transfer desks and baggage areas.

Deputy Chief Engineer of Shanghai International Airport Construction Headquarters, Mr. Lin Jian Hai said, "Through public tender, we finally chose SITA's airport departure control solutions. SITA's on-site experience at Beijing Capital International Airport and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, proves that it has the capability to meet the demands of the Chinese market and to enhance the services we provide to passengers."

Installation of SITA's AirportConnect CUTE at PVG will allow access to all airline and airport IT systems from a single shared workstation over an IP-enabled network using Windows XP. The system will facilitate management and integration of new processes and emerging technologies while supporting existing common use solutions.

"The award of the Shanghai Pudong International Airport contract is an important milestone for SITA. After successful implementation of airport solutions in Guangzhou and Beijing, the Shanghai Pudong win reaffirms SITA's status as the preferred airport system technology provider for the world's leading international airports," commented Elyes M'Rad, SITA Regional Vice-President.

"We are particularly pleased to add PVG to the list of 34 leading airports worldwide integrating SITA's BagManager into their operations. BagManager has the capacity to handle and trace up to 150 million pieces of luggage worldwide, minimizing baggage handling errors with real-time tracking and monitoring across multiple airports," added M'Rad.

The project includes a total of 650 CUTE licenses. SITA currently manages about 30,000 CUTE workstations used by some 285 customers in more than 200 airport locations worldwide, checking in an estimated 580 million passengers per year.
