Mesa Airlines using ARINC's VDL mode 2 service; first regional to make major commitment

Analysis

ANNAPOLIS (ARINC) - Incorporated today announced Mesa Airlines, Inc. has contracted for ARINC's GLOBALinkSM data link communications service, including VDL Mode 2 data link for 30 of its regional jets. The airline completed VDL deployment earlier this month, following successful tests in June.

Mesa will use VDL Mode 2 capability on selected Canadair Regional Jets in its fleet, and has also equipped ten DeHavilland Dash-8 turboprops for ARINC's VHF ACARS® data link service.

"We are delighted Mesa Airlines has chosen our cost-effective VDL Mode 2 service to enhance their fleet communications," stated Karla Cadden, ARINC Sales Director, Aviation Solutions. "This is a notable step forward for America's thriving regional airline industry, and Mesa is strategically positioning itself to be even more competitive through the higher operating efficiencies and lower costs possible with VDL."

During Mesa's recent VDL Mode 2 testing, ARINC provided a dedicated implementation manager and supported Mesa with ground hosting, supplier coordination, lab and flight testing-all components of a successful end-to-end system launch.

"Rollout of ARINC's VDL service went smoothly and we were impressed by the amount of implementation assistance provided," said Bob Hornberg, Mesa Airlines Vice President and Chief Information Officer. "Based on a few months' experience, both these data link services are making a solid contribution to our efficient, on-time flight operations."

Mesa expects to use the new VDL service for automated data reporting, which will support key applications such as preventive maintenance, flight support, and weather-all important tools to streamline flight operations and enhance reliability.

Because of its greater capacity, VDL is widely viewed as the industry's migration path beyond traditional VHF data link. ARINC now operates a global infrastructure of 200 VDL Mode 2 ground stations, including coast-to-coast VDL Mode 2 coverage in the U.S. for aeronautical operational control (AOC).

Mesa currently operates 182 aircraft with over 1,100 daily system departures to over 165 cities, 44 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, and Mexico. Mesa operates as America West Express, US Airways Express and United Express under contractual agreement with America West, US Airways, and United Airlines, respectively, and independently as Mesa Airlines. The company, founded by Larry and Janie Risley in New Mexico in 1982, has approximately 5,000 employees. For more information, visit the web site at www.mesa-air.com.
