Malaysia Airlines engineering completes blended winglet installation for 2nd client

Analysis

KUALA LUMPUR (Malaysia Airlines) - Malaysia Airlines Engineering successfully completed another Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) job last Wednesday with installation of blended winglets to one of the two aircraft belonging to Garuda Indonesia.

The installation on Garuda's 1st B737-800 aircraft was completed within 3 days in Malaysia Airlines Engineering's hangar, located within the Malaysian International Aerospace Centre (MIAC) at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport.

Malaysia Airlines deployed 12 engineers, from its pool of personnel skilled in this task, to work on the aircraft winglet installation and modification performed in a record time whilst conforming to the customer's specifications.

The aircraft then departed Subang for its home base last Friday evening.

The 2nd Garuda B737-800 aircraft for blended winglet installation by Malaysia Airlines Engineering is expected to arrive Subang next month.

Malaysia Airlines first completed this winglet installation for its first customer, Oman Air, which sent 3 aircraft to Subang for this modification.

The blended winglets reduce maintenance costs, provide better climb performance, reduce engine rating requirements and emission as well as contribute to significant savings in fuel consumption.

The General Manager of Malaysia Airlines Engineering and Maintenance Encik Roslan Ismail said, "Malaysia Airlines is the only approved MRO center offering this capability in South East Asia. This has been possible due to the confidence of Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) in Malaysia Airlines Engineering's quality standards, team commitment, excellent infrastructure and readiness of skilled workforce to take on this business".

The blended winglet installation on the 4th aircraft is another significant milestone for Malaysia Airlines Engineering, as it once again showcases its MRO services to customers worldwide. MAS Engineering will also continue to enhance its initiatives through collaboration with its customers and partners to promote the government's vision of making Malaysia a regional aerospace centre.
