Global airport winners and losers for 2005

Analysis

SYDNEY (Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation) - Latest data from OAG shows global airlines added 920,000 frequencies and 146 million seats to their schedules in 2005 - up 3% and 5% respectively year-on-year.

Six of the top ten airports with the largest volume of additional seats in 2005 were in the Asia Pacific region, including China. Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta Airport was the leading airport in the world in terms of additional seat capacity in 2005, due to the additional number of seats offered by domestic Indonesian carriers. Jakarta was closely followed by Beijing Capital Airport, which had over 6.2 million seats to and from the airport last year.

Three US airports, Philadelphia, Charlotte and Houston enjoyed more than 50,000 additional services each in 2005. Meanwhile, Dallas/Fort Worth, Pittsburgh and Chicago Midway were the worst performers, each losing more than 48,000 services, due to the rationalisation of capacity by US majors.
