California's Ontario International Airport Part 2: Dominated by LCCs

Part 1 of this report on Ontario International Airport (OIA) reviewed the features of the airport and its local environment.

While OIA includes a huge urban catchment area, industry is still recovering from the financial crisis and competition from its larger neighbours makes establishing a position in the market that bit more difficult. There has however been a change in ownership which could enhance the airport's fortunes. This Part examines the LCC preeminence at OIA, and outlines the move from ownership by LAWA to the Ontario International Airport Authority, approved in Dec-2015, when operating rights were transferred.

The bill was signed into law by President Obama on 15-Jul-2016 but the transfer has been postponed to 01-Nov-2016, to allow for all the associated paperwork to be completed and filed.

The ownership change opens the door, at least potentially, to private sector investment and management in the long run, but costs must be reined in and the bottom line improved first.
