Atlanta new international terminal project wins key approval, amid budget blowout

Premium Analysis

Soaring construction costs have been blamed for an expected

hike in the cost of expanding and modernising Atlanta Hartsfield Airport –

the world's largest airport in passenger throughput terms. In Jun-07, it was

predicted the project would cost USD6.3 billion, but that figure has recently

been increased to around USD9 billion by airport officials, which could put

upward pressure on airline fares in the form of higher passenger facility charges.

Half of the project's funding relyies on the airport's USD4.50 per passenger

facility charge, up from the 35% originally stipulated.
