Airport shares mixed as market volatility returns

Listed airports had a mixed day, as Asian markets rebounded, but European and North American markets slid on fresh uncertainty about Japan.

Airports of Thailand fell 1.5%, despite reporting a 9.5% increase in passenger traffic in Feb-2011. Highlights were as follows:

  • Passenger numbers: 5.9 million, +9.5%;
    • Domestic: 3.7 million, +11.3%;
    • International: 2.1 million, +6.7%;
      • Bangkok: 4.1 million, +6.1%;
        • Domestic: 947,261, -2.4%;
        • International: 3.2 million, +8.9%;
  • Aircraft movements: 35,989, +12.5%;
  • Air cargo: 106,419 tonnes, +0.2%;

Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad shares gained 0.5% as its traffic jumped 13.3% last month:

  • Passenger numbers: 4.9 million, +13.3%;
    • Kuala Lumpur: 3.0 million, +14.7%;
      • Domestic: 847,098, +8.4;
      • International: 2.1 million, +17.4%;
  • Aircraft movements: 51,065, +7.4%;
  • Air cargo: 71,288 tonnes, +3.3%;

Shares in Beijing Airport, now the world's second busiest, also gained 0.5% yesterday.
