Aer Lingus pilot talks heading in right direction

Analysis

Talks between Aer Lingus and pilots aimed at avoiding industrial action next week have not yet been able to reach an agreement, but Aer Lingus has said it believes negotiations are heading in the right direction. Aer Lingus management is talking with the IALPA pilots union, overseen by the Labour Relations Commission in Dublin in an attempt to resolve a dispute centring around crew rostering.

Strike action at the carrier could disrupt around 30,000 passenger movements per day, and severely affect Aer Lingus operations. The carrier has already been forced to adjust some schedules and even cancel flights due to a shortage of pilots.

Shares in Aer Lingus were up 5.2% yesterday, against the trend of generally lower European airline shares.

Selected EAD daily share price movements (% change): 3-Jun-2011
