Bulgaria Air is the national carrier of Bulgaria and based at Sofia Airport. The airline launched services in 2002 following the collapse of former national carrier Balkan Bulgarian Airways. Owned by diversified aviation company Balkan Hemus Group AD, Bulgaria Air operates a fleet of narrowbody aircraft to destinations in the Middle East, Eastern and Western Europe. The airline also offers charter and business services.

Bulgaria Air strengthens its European network with new E-Jets, but cost reduction is also essential

Bulgaria Air is strengthening its European network with the introduction of Embraer E-Jets to its fleet. Expanding its regional fleet will allow the airline to increase frequencies across its network and better match supply with demand through the use of smaller aircraft than previously.

As LCCs make inroads into its home market, the higher cost legacy carrier must look to consolidate a higher yielding market segment using frequency, but this is a complement to, not an alternative to cost reduction.

As the national carrier of Bulgaria, Bulgaria Air is based at Sofia Airport and operates scheduled services, ad hoc charter services and business jet transportation. Meanwhile Wizz Air is making its presence felt.

The impact of the Ash Attack on the aviation industry has been profound - in a short space of time. CAPA estimates The Ash Attack has already affected the travel plans of 8 million passengers in Europe and around the world, causing at least USD1 billion in lost (and unrecoverable) revenue for the worldwide aviation industry. To this should be added lost ancillary revenues and the costs airlines will incur for re-routing aircraft, as well as caring for stranded passengers and stranded aircraft at various ports. The total cost for the aviation industry (airlines, airports, suppliers, freight operators, handlers etc) could be well over USD2 billion, and rising with each day of disruption.
