Wizz Air announces order for 110 A321neos, cancels order for ten A320ceos

Wizz Air signed (18-Jun-2015) a MoU with Airbus for the purchase of 110 A321neo aircraft, with deliveries scheduled to commence in 2019. The MoU also including options for an additional 90 A321neo aircraft, with Wizz Air holding the right to substitute "a number" of the A321neos for A320neos "depending on its future requirements." The aircraft are to include the new A321neo 'Cabin Flex' configuration, with 239 seats. The carrier also cancelled an order for ten A320ceo aircraft, which had been scheduled for delivery in 2018. Wizz Air CEO József Váradi said: "We looked at different options for this order but Airbus came in with the best overall mix of aircraft, cost efficiency, support and price, so it made sense for us to continue our long relationship with them as we continue to expand our market reach across and beyond Europe. Our operations will continue to see significantly lower costs with these new aircraft achieved through cabin innovations, the latest engine technology, and efficiency improvements." Mr Váradi added: "As the company has recently highlighted, we have an exciting and compelling growth opportunity in Central and Eastern Europe where GDP growth rates significantly exceed that of more mature Western European markets, and the propensity for air travel is growing. Our order for 110 A321neo aircraft will provide the platform to sustain our disciplined expansion over the longer term, enable us to continue to offer low fares to customers across CEE and beyond and drive strong growth well into the next decade." Airbus COO customers John Leahy stated: "We are thrilled by this new order. The success of Wizz Air with its all Airbus fleet is a great endorsement of the A321's unmatched efficiency. Its unbeatable economics combined with its compelling passenger appeal will deliver Wizz Air even better financial returns on their investment."
