Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport pax stable in Mar-2014; 9.5m pax in 1Q2014

Australia's Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport passenger numbers stable - traffic highlights:

  • Mar-2014:
    • Passenger numbers: 3.1 million, -0.1%;
      • Domestic: 2.1 million, -0.1%;
      • International: 1.0 million, +0.1%;
  • 1Q2014:
    • Passenger numbers: 9.5 million, +2.4%;
      • Domestic: 6.1 million, +1.2%;
      • International: 3.3 million, +4.9%.

Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport CEO Kerrie Mather stated (17-Apr-2014) international traffic continues to be partially driven by strong Chinese passenger growth, increasing 17.8% year-on-year in 1Q2014 and 14.9% over the past 12 months. Malaysian passengers have also been a key driver, increasing 23% in Mar-2014 underpinned by the additional daily frequencies from AirAsia X and Malaysia Airlines. The large inbound markets of US and UK passengers were also strong contributors to passenger growth over the quarter, increasing 6.0% and 5.3% respectively. Meanwhile, Australian outbound passengers fell 3.5% due to the timing of Easter, but was up 3.4% over the past 12 months.
