South Korea's int'l pax up 15% in May-2012, total cargo down slightly

South Korea's Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs reports (20-Jun-2012) international passenger numbers reached 3.8 million in May-2012, the highest number for the month of May. Details include:

    • International: 3.8 million, +14.9% year-on-year;
    • By region:
      • Japan: 948,493, +35.3%;
      • China: 919,567, +11.5%;
      • Southeast Asia: 1.1 million, +10.3%;
      • Americas: 357,403, +4.6%;
      • Europe: 278,174, +7.0%;
      • Oceania: 108,901, +6.9%;
      • Others: 59,708, +8.2%;
    • Domestic: 2.1 million, +5.4%;
    • LCCs: 910,000, +14.2%;
  • Cargo volume: 284,000 tonnes, -0.5%;
    • International: 262,000 tonnes, -0.6%;
    • By region:
      • Japan: 35,463 tonnes, +7.5%;
      • China: 46,530 tonnes, -4.1%;
      • Southeast Asia: 71,225 tonnes, +5.6%;
      • Americas: 54,107 tonnes, -9.0%;
      • Europe: 44,918 tonnes, -3.2%;
      • Oceania: 4239 tonnes, -3.7%;
      • Others: 5063 tonnes, +28.6%;
    • Domestic: 23,000 tonnes, +1.3%;
  • Flights: 47,860, +10.8%.

According to the Ministry, South Korea's full service carriers accounted for 66.7% of total international passengers in May-2012, while the nation's LCCs accounted for 7.0% of the total international passenger numbers, up 3.4 ppts. South Korea's LCCs accounted for 43.3%, up 3.3 ppts of the total domestic passenger numbers in May-2012.
