South Korea's int'l pax numbers up 10% in 1Q2013, domestic pax down 4%

South Korea's Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs reports (23-Apr-2013) international passenger numbers rose 10% year-on-year to 12.5 million in 1Q2013, a new first-quarter high. Traffic highlights for 1Q2013 include:

  • Passenger numbers: 17.2 million, +5.6% year-on-year;
    • Domestic: 4.7 million, -4.4%;
      • LCCs: 2.2 million, +5%;
    • International: 12.5 million,+10%;
      • Japan: 2.9 million, +1.5%;
      • China: 2.6 million, +14.8%;
      • Southeast Asia: 4.6 million, +13.8%;
      • Americas: 962,832, +3.0%;
      • Europe: 739,001, +11.7%;
      • Oceania: 484,396, +15.2%;
      • Others: 190,598, +14.9%.

According to the Ministry, South Korea's full service carriers accounted for 65.9% of total international passengers in 1Q2013 while the nation's LCCs accounted for 9.4% of the total international passengers, up 3.1 ppts. South Korea's LCCs had a domestic market share of 47.3%, up 4.3 ppts.
