Ryanair check-in fee ruled illegal

Ryanair's policy of charging passengers GBP/EUR40 for not printing boarding passes prior to airport check-in has been ruled illegal by a Spanish court (Daily Mail, 15-Jan-2011). A judge announced Ryanair must print the documents for free and cannot impose a EUR40 fee for the service. According to aviation law, airlines are obliged to issue boarding passes free of charge, with the court stating Ryanair's position as an LCC does "not allow it to alter its basic contractual obligations". Ryanair is to appeal against the ruling.
