New Zealand Ministry of Transport GM aviation and maritime Bruce Johnson, speaking at the CAPA Australia Pacific Aviation Summit, stated (07-Aug-2013) "SmartGate and pre-screening of baggage have made a real difference" in the liberalisation of Australia-New Zealand travel. Mr Johnson also stated: "Small scale is beneficial when talking about immigration, customs and quarantine." Mr Johnson added: "Are you going to see a step change through further changes to facilitation between New Zealand and Australia in terms of demand? In think that's questionable. You have to ask yourself in terms of effort, is that the best place to focus your attention?"

Having built a regional Asian network anchored around mainland China as a source market, HNA Group's Hong Kong Airlines is leveraging its hub capability from short/medium haul connections to long haul transfers, which also reduce CASK. Hong Kong Airlines resumed long haul flying in early 2016 with a service to Cairns and the Gold Coast. Auckland will be added from Nov-2016 and Hong Kong Airlines should be able to break up the Air New Zealand-Cathay Pacific joint venture on the route.
Hong Kong Airlines is restricted from serving major Australian cities due to bilateral limits (Australia and Hong Kong have not been able to agree on increased capacity levels). Hong Kong Airlines' owner HNA has bought into Virgin Australia, which plans to serve the key HNA hubs of Beijing and Hong Kong in 2017, providing access from major Australian cities. Virgin could also help Hong Kong Airlines make viable service to smaller Australian cities.
Hong Kong Airlines is receiving a lift in Australia and New Zealand bookings, attributed to Asian consumers shifting away from travel in Europe, which has repeatedly been impacted by terrorist acts. Hong Kong Airlines believes that passengers are "viewing Australia and New Zealand together as more of a safe-haven status destination".
Philippine Airlines Part 2: more expansion to Australia and China as A321neos arrive in 2017
Philippine Airlines (PAL) is planning more international growth over the next year or two with a focus on Australia, China, the US and potentially Europe. Nonstops for Brisbane and more capacity for Sydney are in the pipeline for Australia, while in the Chinese market PAL is looking to launch Chengdu.
In Europe PAL is considering adding a second European destination in 2018, with Frankfurt and Rome under consideration. PAL has already added capacity to Europe this year by upgrading its London Heathrow service to daily.
This is the second in a series of analysis reports on the Philippines market. The first report focused on PAL’s Middle East operation, which could be reduced in 2017 amid intensifying competition and weakening demand.
