London Gatwick Airport pax down 1% in Feb-2013; important role in new routes to growing economies

UK's London Gatwick Airport passenger numbers down 1% - traffic highlights for Feb-2013:

  • Passenger numbers: 2.1 million, -0.7% year-on-year;
    • UK and Channel Islands: 272,000, +2.4%;
    • Ireland: 90,000, -5.8%;
    • European scheduled: 1.1 million, -0.7%;
    • European charter: 202,700, -3.4%;
    • North Atlantic: 87,600, -9.2%;
    • Other long-haul: 387,900, +1.9%;
  • Cargo volume: 7999 tonnes, +18.0%;

Commenting on the results, airport CFO Nick Dunn said "While economic conditions continue to be challenging in Europe, it is positive that Gatwick is succeeding in developing direct air links to the world's fastest growing economies, which are vital to the success of the UK economy," adding that "Gatwick is playing an increasingly important role in opening new routes to growing economies such as China, Russia, Turkey, Vietnam and now Indonesia."
