Fly540's Angola hub to open in Aug-2010; growth at Fly540 Kenya and Fly540 Tanzania

Lonrho, parent company of Fly540, announced (29-Jul-2010) the following network news:

  • Angola hub: The first flight from the Angolan hub is scheduled for 15-Aug-2010. The company commented: "Whilst being delayed from the company's planned start date, this flight will represent a step change in the trajectory of the Fly540 network into a domestic and regional market that is seeing an economic boom and is chronically under-serviced";
  • Fly540 Kenya: Added a new ninth domestic route during the quarter. The carrier added that with service to Kakamega, Fly540 is "able to open up parts of western Kenya which were previously incredibly difficult to reach". This expansion, along with continued growth on existing routes resulted in passenger numbers being 12% higher in the quarter on a year-on-year basis, with turnover increasing by 22%. The carrier added that the Masai Mara safari region operators have been moved from Jomo Kenyatta to Wilson airport, the traditional departure point for safari operators. Along with this move, new services to Amboseli, Nanyaki and Sambura will commence in Aug-2010;
  • Fly540 Tanzania: During Jun-2010, the carrier operated an additional aircraft, doubling its capacity to meet market demand. This has lead to a 66% increase in turnover for the quarter compared to the same quarter in the prior year. [more]
