EU airports using body scanners to be subject to common rules

European Union (EU) airports using body scanners will be subject to common rules addressing safety, privacy and health, under a new proposal adopted by the European Commission from EU guidelines (European Voice/V3/Consumerist, 14-Nov-2011). EU legislation prohibits the images from the scanners, which reveal what is underneath a passenger's clothing, to be stored or printed. Only scanners that do not use x-ray technology will be authorised, and staff reviewing the images must be in a separate area to other passengers being screened.
