Emirates President says UK's APD not a green tax

Emirates President Tim Clark fears the recent UK APD "will not go away", despite Emirates pointing out to the UK Government that funds raised from the tax do not go towards environmental improvement, but rather the tax purely generates income (ABTN, 10-Nov-2010). Mr Clark stated the UK has admitted that, and warned that "if you (the Government) continue to see it (aviation) as an easy source of low hanging fruit, in the end the tide will turn and people will stop travelling or they'll lessen the amount of trips they take".

Emirates: "We have pointed out that the aviation community is penalised where other modes of transport, which are theoretically as polluting as aviation, are not. None of this seems to make a difference to government. No other business has such a track record of improving itself, but it doesn't seem to matter how many figures we put in front of governments, it doesn't seem to make any difference." ABTN, 10-Nov-2010.
