EC opens investigation into financing of projects at German Leipzig

16-Jun-2011 9:31 AM

European Commission confirmed (15-Jun-2011) it has launched an in-depth investigation into loans and capital injections granted to Germany's Leipzig/Halle Airport, to determine whether the funds are in line with EU state aid rules. The EC said that at this stage, it considers "that Germany has not demonstrated that the public funding, which covers 100% of the total investment costs, is justified and proportionate". The EC is "particularly concerned that the aid may be giving the airport, which has become the European hub of DHL Express, an unfair advantage vis à vis its competitors in Germany or elsewhere in Europe."
