EC expects decision on oneworld cooperation to be made by Jul-2010

European Competition Commissioner, Joaquin Almunia, stated the European Commission (EC) would decide by Jun-2010 or Jul-2010 whether to approve or block a plan by British Airways, American Airlines and Iberia to deepen cooperation within oneworld (Reuters, 19-Apr-2010). The EC is reviewing the results of a market test on concessions offered by the three companies last month. The three have proposed surrendering some slots for routes from London to Dallas, London to Boston, London to Miami and possibly London to New York if competitive conditions change, to gain EU antitrust immunity for the proposed alliance.

European Commission: "The trend towards consolidation in this sector is a reality, one that we support. When analysing mergers and alliances in the sector, we are mindful of the benefits and scope for the industry in terms of international competition but also of the need to ensure that consumers do not pay the price for it," Joaquin Almunia, European Competition Commissioner.
