China unveils C919; deliveries expected in 2016

Aviation Industry Corp of China (AVIC) unveiled (08-Sep-2009) its proposed C919 aircraft at the Hong Kong Air Show. The single-aisle C919 aircraft, designed by Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (Comac), will be the country's largest locally-produced commercial jet and is part of China's long-term plan to break the duopoly of Airbus and Boeing in the production of large commercial aircraft. Comac stated the C919 project "will set a landmark for the overall modernisation" of China. The 168-190 seat jet is designed or short- to medium-range sectors of up to 5,555 km (3,450 miles) and is due to make its maiden flight in 2014 and be delivered to clients in 2016. Comac also announced that it has received 208 confirmed and unconfirmed orders for its 70-seat ARJ21. [more]
