China Southern Airlines Australia Region General Manager Henry He stated the carrier has benefitted from new visa arrangements and codeshare agreements with carriers including KLM, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines and Pakistan International Airlines (etravelblackboard, 30-Jun-2011). He added that growth is “strong” on the carrier’s Australia services, adding, “we would love to be getting our first A380 onto the Guangzhou-Sydney run”.

China Southern Airlines may be Asia's largest airline, but it has one of the smallest long haul networks. China Southern has shifted growth to international markets, which represented only 17% of capacity in 2009 but doubled to 34% in 2016. Its long haul plank has been Australia and New Zealand, funnelling traffic from around China down to its southern hub at Guangzhou. China Southern has met its objectives for Australia/NZ and now turns its focus to the market that has preoccupied most other Northeast Asian airlines: North America.
China Southern plans to increase flights from five daily to 11 daily, about the size that ANA is today – and larger than Air China and China Eastern. Although China Southern can build on the principle of using Guangzhou as a North-South hub, North America is a radically different proposition. Guangzhou's southern positioning limits exposure to the Chinese market that China Southern knows best. China Southern will need to target connections to Southeast Asia and India, which have only been a small component of Air China and China Eastern's network.
Malaysia Airlines update Part 2: China drives resumption of capacity and network growth
Malaysia Airlines will resume expansion in 2017 with several new routes and capacity increases on existing routes. Most of the expansion is directed at China, with eight new destinations, the resumption of a second daily flight to Shanghai, and upgauging one of its Hong Kong flights.
The airline is evaluating further expansion in China and elsewhere in North Asia in 2H2017 if it succeeds at securing additional A330s. Malaysia Airlines continues to seek leases on up to four A330s, which would result in a fleet of 19 aircraft.
Overall seat capacity will be up by 5% to 6% in 2017. Passenger numbers could potentially increase by more than 10% as Malaysia Airlines aims to significantly improve its load factor on the back of new lower fares.
