China Eastern and Shanghai Airport sign strategic agreement

China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airport Authority signed a strategic agreement, as part of which China Eastern will raise capacity, launch more international routes and add flight frequencies to major domestic cities to improve Shanghai Pudong International Airport's connectivity (Shanghai Daily, 29-Sep-2010). The two companies will also raise investment in operations by 13% p/a in the next five years and increase the number of flights by 77%, with plans to cooperate with Shanghai's high-speed rail system to improve transport links and establish city terminals in major destinations within 300km from the city to facilitate check-in. They will also optimise procedures to reduce minimum connecting time to 80 minutes for international flight transit and 60 minutes for domestic services. The airport expects to handle 65 million passengers and 4.75 million tons of cargo p/a by 2015.

China Eastern Airlines: "A direct flight from Shanghai to Rome will be launched next year and more airlines are expected to begin operations ...
