CAAC: Industry profit down 77% in 2012, announces 2012 highlights

CAAC released (20-May-2013) the following operational highlights for 2012:

  • Financial:
    • Revenue: CNY556,140 million (USD86,897 million), +10.5% year-on-year;
      • Airlines: CNY388,980 million (USD60,778 million), +9.1%;
      • Airports: CNY55,020 million (USD8597 million), +10.9%;
      • Others: CNY112,140 million (USD17,522 million), +15.7%;
    • Profit: CNY29,590 million (USD4623 million), -76.5%;
      • Airlines: CNY21,100 million (USD3297 million), -62.1%;
      • Airports: CNY4540 million (USD709.4 million), -14.1%;
      • Others: CNY3960 million (USD618.8 million), -0.3%;
  • Number of airlines: 46 airlines including 36 government owned and 10 privately owned. China had 10 all-freighter airlines, 14 JVs with foreign companies and five listed airlines at the end of 2012;
  • Fleet: 1941 aircraft registered in China at the end of 2012, 177 aircraft more than in 2011;
  • Route network: There were 2457 scheduled air routes at the end of 2012, including 2076 domestic (99 to Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) and 381 international routes covering 121 cities across 52 countries;
  • Aircraft utilisation rate: 9.15 hours across the industry including 9.58 hours for medium to large aircraft and 4.91 hours for small aircraft;
  • Bilateral: China had 114 bilateral air services agreement, comparable to 2011, and includes agreements with 44 countries in Asia, 23 in Africa, 35 in Europe, eight in Americas and four in Oceania;
  • Safety: There were 295 incidents reported in 2012 including five of which were considered serious, down 44.4%;
  • On-time performance: 74.8% of flights operated as scheduled in 2012. The main cause of abnormal operation was airlines (38.5%), followed by air traffic control (25.0%), weather related (21.6%) and other (14.9%);
  • Service standard: There were 1801 aviation related complaints made;
  • Investment: Total fixed asset investment reached CNY146,460 million (USD22,884 million) including a 3.6% increase in civil aviation infrastructure and technical investment of CNY71,220 million (USD11,128 million). Investment in airport fixed assets increased 0.7% to CNY49,870 million (USD7792 million) and investment in air traffic control system increased 48.3% to CNY2670 million (USD417.2 million);
  • Taxes paid: CNY21,790 million (USD3405 million), -0.3%;
  • Environment: Airlines' use of temporary routes amounted to 413,000 flights, shortening the flight distance by more than 14 million kms, saving 76,000 tonnes of jet fuel and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by around 240,000 tons;
  • Labour: 31,381 pilots, 3574 more than in 2011. [more - original PR - Chinese]
